Hi, I’m Professor Payoff — a retired community college instructor who found the freedom to walk away from full-time work at age 50. And no, I wasn’t born into money, I didn’t win the lottery, and I didn’t “make it big” with real estate or crypto.
I just figured out how to use the tools available to most educators — like 403(b)s, 457(b)s, pensions, and a little discipline — to build real financial security over time.
🎓 A Teacher Who Retired Early
I spent over 25 years in higher education. Like a lot of teachers, I started with no real financial plan. I contributed a little here and there, and I figured “the pension will be enough.”
But over time, I started learning more about financial independence — and how teachers have some unique advantages when it comes to early retirement. I made a few key changes, took retirement planning seriously, and eventually walked away from full-time work at age 50.
I later returned to work, not because I had to, but because I wanted more financial flexibility and the freedom to pursue other goals.
💡 Why I Started This Blog
I started Professor Payoff because I believe teachers are underpaid, overworked — and often completely left out of the financial planning conversation. There’s a path forward, but most educators don’t know where to begin.
This blog is where I share:
- Step-by-step guidance on 403(b) and 457(b) plans
- Strategies to retire early, even if you’re mid-career
- Mistakes I made so you don’t have to
- Simple, traditional investing principles that work
No hype. No sales pitches. Just what actually works — from someone who’s done it.
🧭 My Mission
To help teachers — especially those who think it’s “too late” — build a clear, practical, and realistic path to financial freedom.
